What madeleines were to Proust, solder is to McGarrah. “Of course, the most important skill to master was soldering," says Bob McGarrah, now staff system planning engineer at Central Illinois Light Co. Junior engineers constructing projects out of transistors and circuit boards had to hone basic shop skills: measuring, cutting, drilling, and assembly. The things seemed magical."Īnd messy in a way tinkerers love. “The CK722 is the first recollection I have of that transistor type, indeed, of any transistor type at all. “They were the only transistors a kid could easily obtain with saved-up pocket change," he says. At that time, in the mid-1960s, RadioShack sold “blister packs" of five transistors for a dollar. Lee started fooling around with transistors when he was only five. Transistors weren't just sensitive devices, they were the mysterious oracles of a new age-“Just a little solid block of black plastic with three thin wires sticking out," says Tom Lee, associate professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University. I was amazed to find that the transistor radio I built would pick up the local stations without an external antenna and ground like I had to use with the tube radio." “A few weeks later, I got a care package from them with a blue CK722 and a Sylvania 2N35 transistor and a couple books that showed how to hook them up. “I told some of my relatives that I didn't think that transistors were going to amount to much," Hosking told me. (Barre, Vt.), had concluded that vacuum tubes were the only way to go. By the ripe old age of 12, Hosking, now a senior application and design engineer with SB Electronics Inc. The irresistible transistor cast a spell over even die-hard vacuum tube enthusiasts like Terry Hosking. Tens of thousands of CK722s were sold between 1953 and the mid-1960s. I'm tempted to say the PC, but that doesn't quite capture it. “For sheer excitement, I can't think of a parallel with another thing in technology. “I turned it on in my room at night after lights out, and listened to rock and roll or a baseball game," he says wistfully. With his new transistor, Ward built a radio, just a simple tuned circuit with a germanium diode to detect a signal and a CK722 as an audio amplifier. “The blue ones, for instance, the iridescent blue color is just gorgeous." The package is quite spectacular, you know, the actual shape of the device and the color," he says. “They were probably only a couple bucks at the time, but just the excitement of actually owning one of these was intense. (Lexington, Mass.) made available to hobbyists through RadioShack stores starting in March 1953. Recalling himself as a boy of 10 marching into his local radio distributor and plunking down his allowance for his first transistor, Ward taps into the same wonder that gripped him when he laid eyes on the CK722, which Raytheon Co. president, Buddy Holly was flying around on what would be his last tour, and Texas Instruments and Fairchild Semiconductor had both filed patent applications for something called an integrated circuit. The year was 1959: Fidel Castro had just taken Cuba, John F. Photo: Jack Wardįor Ward and the CK722, it was love at first sight. introduced the CK722 and slightly better CK721 (less noise, higher gain) in 1953. “Nick can't believe how fast technology changes and that the people I talk to have changed the world," adds Ward, who as curator of the online museum has shifted his focus from collecting early transistors to collecting oral histories from the engineers who sparked the Semiconductor Era. in physics, is learning a lot from his old man. Far from thinking that his dad's a square, Ward's oldest son, Nick, who is pursuing a B.A. “My wife's very supportive, and my younger two children think it's fairly amusing, and probably not a bad way to have a mid-life crisis," says Ward of his family's reaction to his passionate pursuit of transistor history. When he's not working as associate director of quality for the Bedford, Mass., facility of gene-chip maker Affymetrix Inc., he's busy maintaining his virtual Transistor Museum on the Web and is widely acknowledged by fellow collectors as a techno-anthropologist par excellence. He's written one book about the CK722 and has started another about early transistor history at RCA. His stately yellow Victorian home on a quiet, tree-lined street in Brookline, Mass., has a basement crammed with enough code oscillators, Geiger counters, radios, hand-wrought circuit boards, transistorized hearing aids, subminiature vacuum tubes, diodes, resistors, and capacitors to make any collector of vintage electronic gear drool. He's collected thousands of early transistor specimens, including dozens of CK722s. Is it possible to love a transistor? Certainly what Jack Ward feels for the Raytheon CK722, the first transistor sold to the general public, goes beyond casual affection.

Astronomers saw the first signs of the black hole in 1964 when a sounding rocket detected celestial sources of X-rays according to NASA. The first black hole ever discovered was Cygnus X-1, located within the Milky Way in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan. After decades of black holes being known only as theoretical objects. The term "black hole" was coined many years later in 1967 by American astronomer John Wheeler. First black hole discoveredĪlbert Einstein first predicted the existence of black holes in 1916, with his general theory of relativity. It is believed that the interior of black holes could contain a wormhole, the puncture is spacetime, that could offer a portal to another point in spacetime potentially even in a different universe. Wormholes can be thought of as tunnels that connect two separate points in space and time. Over very long timescales, we are speaking about timescales that are much much longer than the age of our universe, the theory states that this trickle of escaping particles will cause the black hole to slowly evaporate. Instead of the particle antiparticle pair existing for a moment and then annihilating each other, one of them can get by gravity and fall into the black hole, while the other particle can fly off into space. When this process occurs near the event horizon of a black hole, strange things can happen. However, they can also recombine and disappear again. When this happens, a particle and its companion anti-particle appear. Quantum theory suggests that there exist virtual particles popping in and out of existence all the time. Hawking predicted that black holes could also radiate away energy and shrink very slowly. Do black holes die?īlack holes do not die per se, but they are theoretically predicted to eventually slowly evaporate over extremely long time scales.īlack holes grow by the accretion of matter nearby that is pulled in by their immense gravity. The first detected black hole was Cygnus-X1. Over time, as other end products of stellar death were detected, namely, neutron stars seen as pulsars it became clear that black holes were real and ought to exist. It was unclear at the time if these corresponded to real objects in the universe. The black hole solution was found was by Karl Schwarzschild in 1915, and these regions - black holes - were found to distort space extremally and generate a puncture in the fabric of spacetime. The theory of general relativity connects the geometry or shape of shape to the detailed distribution of matter. Einstein's equations describe the shape of space around matter. Who discovered black holes?īlack holes were predicted as an exact mathematical solution to Einstein's equations. This channel circumvents the formation of the traditional star, and is believed to operate in the early universe and produce more massive black hole seeds. Another way that black holes form is from the direct collapse of gas, a process that is expected to result in more massive black holes with a mass ranging from 1000 times the mass of the sun up to even 100,000 times the mass of the sun. Not all stars leave behind black holes, stars with lower birth masses leave behind a neutron star or a white dwarf. The resulting black hole that is left behind is referred to as a stellar mass black hole and its mass is of the order of a few times the mass of the sun. Stars whose birth masses are above roughly 8 to 10 times mass of our sun, when they exhaust all their fuel - their hydrogen - they explode and die leaving behind a very compact dense object, a black hole. According to the first pathway, they are stellar corpses, so they form when massive stars die. How do black holes form?īlack holes are expected to form via two distinct channels. COFFEE SHOP – NIGHT, then hit Tab and it jumps down and awaits your input for the action/description line. Very intuitive tabbingįor new screenwriters: By tabbing I mean, for example, you type INT. I jumped right in and started writing a scene, and it just flew. The interface is sleek, plain, and modern, and fully customizable. Wow! This app is an elegant, easy-to-use, streamlined little firecracker of a screenwriting program. Take it from me - I’m a desktop guy who used to vehemently poo-poo using anything other than Final Draft, but here are a few others worth your attention: Trelby Whereas software development used to be the realm of large, well-funded companies and teams made up of dozens, if not hundreds of developers and programmers, now it’s all about the smaller, more agile companies rushing in to fill an ever-increasing demand for lighter, cheaper apps, and we screenwriters stand to benefit from the panoply of new options for screenwriting. As the name of the article states: I’m here to provide some cheaper and free alternatives to Final Draft that, in my opinion, really give Final Draft a run for its money. I don’t quite remember much other than I wasn’t a very good beta tester because I was extremely busy at the time, and that the Final Draft folks were very nice and responsive.īut I’m not here to rake Final Draft over the coals. Update 5/23/22 - A few months after this article was originally published, I was invited to take part in the beta development for Final Draft. And Final Draft is there with a fair priced offering for it. And while screenwriters who got their start during the heady days of the typewriter (like me and many of my generation X) are probably not keen on the idea of writing a screenplay on a tablet, thousands of younger screenwriters have no problem banging out scripts on a mobile device. There are tons of excellent features that make Final Draft a solid writing app, and most folks wouldn’t dream of trading their Final Draft for another screenwriting app.Īnd as far as pricing goes, I have to emphasize that Final Draft does offer a lower-cost version of their app for iOS, as well as educational discounts, so my beef with their pricing isn’t full-on Kobe / Angus. But I don’t blame Final Draft – they’ve created and marketed a great product that basically now dominates the screenwriting space.Īnd that domination didn’t come just through great marketing. $199 for Final Draft 12 is a big chunk of change for most aspiring screenwriters. The game has changed when it comes to simplicity and UI design, yet Final Draft still feels a bit stuck in that 90s Microsoft Word vibe, as does its cousin, Movie Magic Screenwriter, and many other writing apps, if we’re being perfectly honest.ĭislike 3) The price. But it was certainly mine, on two different sets of hardware over several years and on several iterations of operating systems.ĭislike 2) The interface/user experience. Is that everybody’s experience? I don’t know. Though it did crash on the Mac, it crashed a lot less than when I ran it on my pc. And to be certain, Final Draft is a solid app and deserves a lot of credit, and certainly not hate.īut what do I strongly dislike about Final Draft? Three things:ĭislike 1) Before I switched from a Windows machine to a Mac, Final Draft had a penchant for crashing in the most inopportune moments, no matter what version I ran. I reserve that word for shows like The Bachelor. What do I hate? Well, “hate” is a strong word. And 95% of the time, that’s either a PDF or, you guessed it, a Final Draft file.) (And if you’re running a script coverage service like me, you need to be able to open whatever file the client sends in. What do I love? Its ubiquity: Everybody uses it. The waitress ( an older lady ) was very nice, attentive and accommodating. We decided to have a lunch there to try out the food. At one point she was discussing something more on a personal level with an employee and completely ignored me for a few minutes, till a man came out and asked if I was being helped and she said " I got this" and continued the conversation for another minute before she finished my order. I bought a tart jelly preserve and served it with the cake - it was fabulous! We bought some cold cuts at the deli counter, unfortunately the lady was not very friendly, her indifferent attitude didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy right before Christmas. However, very moist, light and not too sweet. The cake was ready and looked very good, three layers, whipped cream and cherries, unfortunately not the sour cherries. Restaurant decorated in pub-like European-style restaurant, walls setting the alpine atmosphere, good live music and food is okay for the price. Four of us (two slowly aging grandparents and two rapidly aging granddaughters) stopped in for lunch on Sunday, June 11. The young, ambitious David Raksin, hired by Powell to help orchestrate and arrange the music with Chaplin, toiled 20-hour days, lost 25 pounds, and was often so exhausted that he’d sleep in the studio. Orchestrator Edward Powell nearly lost his eyesight from concentrating so hard on writing the music. remarked that watching his father compose was like getting a “free performance,” but he admitted that the music associates “suffered pure torture.” This certainly proved to be true on the set of Modern Times (1936). He neither glorifies nor criticizes Chaplin, instead defaulting to the role of historian, allowing the reader to decide.Īccording to Lochner’s text, Charlie Chaplin Jr. Yet Lochner doesn’t contend sufficiently with how such stories (some of which reveal an artist’s ugly sadism) are normalized as a result of society’s positive perceptions of artists’ work and persona. The often harried professionals would record these sounds in musical notation and take care of all the practical elements of producing: arranging, conducting, playing, recording, and so on. A few artists quoted in the book describe Chaplin sounding out his notes (“la-la-ing” or humming) or thematic ideas (e.g., “Wagnerian”) for each second of every scene, repeatedly changing the musician’s interpretation until it was exactly right, note for note. It read, “It takes time to play a violin if you want to be good at it eight hours a day for five years.”Įight hours a day for five years may also be the cumulative amount of time Chaplin spent communicating his unique musical vision to his musicians, a torturous exercise in creative collaboration. In an early draft for his 1952 film Limelight, one line epitomized the director’s personal struggle on this front. Chaplin taught himself how to play the violin and cello as a young man-but he couldn’t read a note. The way Lochner fleshes out the behind-the-scenes drama of Chaplin’s scores, his workaholism, and deficiencies (where they existed) can be riveting. The Music of Charlie Chaplin is rich in detail: the relentless effort Chaplin put into learning instruments, the musical influences in his work, samples of sheet music. But in its contextualization of Chaplin’s film scoring, the book provides vital insight into a person considered one of the most important figures of early cinema, and reveals an artist with a deep hunger for complete authorship. Jim Lochner’s The Music of Charlie Chaplin, a rare kind of film and music history book, doesn’t weigh in morally on the subject. It can lead to lionization instead of a complete account of who they were as human beings. While nightmarish production stories about legendary artists are worthy of dramatizing in biographical narratives, a failure to consider how artists’ mistreatment of others should shape their legacy is misguided. Yet society tends to correlate a ceaseless work ethic with high-quality craft. It’s impossible-perhaps redundant-to speculate on the extent to which Chaplin’s perfectionism was necessary to create his masterpieces. Stories of Chaplin’s onerous on-set demands are part and parcel of an enduring legacy, even if his treatment of collaborators isn’t considered legally or morally acceptable by contemporary standards. The opening scene of City Lights (1931)-wherein Chaplin’s signature childlike, vagrant character, the Tramp, is given a flower by the romantic lead, Virginia Cherrill-took an astounding 342 takes over the course of five days before Chaplin fired, and then rehired, Cherrill. He worked some of his actors and crew into the ground until they quit, were fired for less-than-perfect quality, or collapsed from mental exhaustion. One of the most pivotal filmmakers of the early Hollywood era, Chaplin developed a reputation for perfectionism. To work with the great Charlie Chaplin meant suffering some of the most traumatic creative pains imaginable. Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2022-4262 exists in the wild.
